One Farm at a Time
A farm, co-op, and community partnership to ensure local food availability.
Local farmers Jeff and Annie Main want to preserve their farm as an organic farm and keep it affordable for farmers in the future. They have created an agricultural easement to be held in perpetuity by the Yolo Land Trust.
How does the easement work?
• The land must always be farmed
• The land must be farmed sustainably
• The farmer must live on the land
• No less than 50% of the farmer’s
income must be derived from farming
Only the actual agricultural value of the farm property will remain, making the farm affordable to the next farmer—and the next.
In the video below, Jeff Main of Good Humus Produce in the Capay Valley of Yolo County describes a strategy of adding stipulations to conservation easements, in order to assure that farmers can and will live on their land.
"Each generation builds on the past generation" — quite a vision for a future of farming!
