How to Join

Enhance your membership - be a Volunteer

Joining the Co-op is easy. Just fill out a brief application at the store. You pay a $5 (non-refundable) membership fee and your first $10 worth of shares. (Each share is $1.) Congratulations! You are now a shareholder and owner of the Co-op, joining about 9,000 other households.

As a shareholder you are asked to invest in the Co-op. Your share dollars provide the Co-op with what every business needs to operate: working capital. You need to invest $20 worth of shares once a year at the end of March (until you own $300 in shares) to keep your membership "active".

If you are experiencing financial hardship, you can request an exemption from purchasing additional shares. All share money is refundable after you resign from membership.

If you have just joined or are thinking about joining, we strongly encourage you to attend a New Member Orientation. Times are posted in the store at the Information Desk.

An Expanded Disclosure Document (.PDF format) describes legal information you are entitled to see before joining.

Volunteer!

Enhance your Co-op Membership

Discounts for working members

Co-op members can choose to volunteer in the store they own. Working member households receive a 5 percent discount on their Co-op purchases for each month that they work (as compared to all other "active" members, who pay the shelf price).
If yours is a household of 1 or 2 adults, you would be required to volunteer 2 hours each month to receive your working members' discount. Larger households volunteer additional hours each month to receive their discount.
A member who can regularly volunteer on a weekly schedule may enhance their membership benefits by participating in our Superwork program. Most Superworkers spend four hours per week (depending on household size) in a variety of skilled and very-skilled tasks.
Some members volunteer in the office, others stock groceries on shelves in the mornings, still others may slice and wrap cheese for the Deli. We do restrict some members (e.g. former employees cannot move directly from paid work to the same tasks as a volunteer), and we reserve the right to decline the services of volunteer members, based on past shopping, volunteer, or employment performance. Age does make a difference for volunteers -- please read about Co-op Hands On Work training if you are sixteen or seventeen years old. We try to make reasonable accomodation for a wide range of abilities -- please contact the Membership Director for more information.
If you are interested in becoming a working member, we ask that you attend a New Member Orientation. We also suggest you pick up a copy of our brochure "Volunteer at the Co-op."

Seniors always receive working member prices

If you are 62 years old or older, you will receive the 5 percent working member discount every time you shop whether or not you are a member of the store. To receive your discount, let your cashier know that you are a senior. Seniors are welcome and encouraged to show their suppport by joining the Co-op.

Non-members welcome!

Non-members are welcome to shop at the Davis Food Co-op but are charged an additional 5 percent above our member price. The price you see on packages, or on the shelf, is the member price.

Update your address in the Co-op's member files by dropping us a note or emailing dwalter[at]davisfood.coop, with the subject "Update my co-op address."

Withdrawal from Membership

Co-op membership means a little more than cornflakes. We think that it makes sense that processing a membership withdrawal would be a touch more complicated than returning a box of flakes that don't suit you.

We can mail you a form, or you can submit a short note which must contain the following:

  • your name (and it must be legible)
  • a simple statement such as "I wish to withdraw my membership."
  • your signature and the date
  • an address to which we can send a check for your share investment

Refund checks can take as long as eight weeks to process (depending on the time of year). We generally are able to mail them within four weeks, and often are able to accomodate members with special circumstances -- please enquire by emailing dwalter[at]davisfood.coop.

You also have the option of writing the same note but donating your investment dollars to the Davis Co-op Community Fund.
